The validation duty in Israel was determined in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Transportation and applies to all types of Rav-Kav cards and apps, for every trip, regardless of profiles that qualify for a discount or free travel, including citizens aged 75 and older.
The Red Line of Dankal is a “semi-open system” means of transportation. At street-level stations, the validation is based on trust in the passenger who is required to pay and validate the Rav-Kav card or the app independently and without being controlled by a gate or the driver. At the underground stations, the passenger is required to pay and validate the Rav-Kav card or the app at the entrance gate to the station and at the exit gate.
According to the law and under the guidance of the Ministry of Transportation, it is mandatory to have a suitable travel ticket in advance, to validate it with the validation device before boarding the train, and to make sure that the validation is correct. Passengers discovered without a travel ticket or a duly validated Rav-Kav or mobile app will be charged with an increased fare (fine).
Validation via Rav-Kav
- At street-level stations, the trip must be validated using the validation devices spread throughout the station platforms before boarding the car.
- When the travel distance exceeds 15 km, you will be required to select the destination station to determine the travel rate.
At underground stations, hold the Rav-Kav card against the reader at the entrance and exit gates.
Trip Validation via Mobile (apps)
- Download one of the apps for paying in public transport from the app store on the smart device: Pango, HopOn or Cello.
- Allow location and camera services.
- Set the starting station and select the travel destination along the Red Line.
- Your smart device will receive a QR code. At street-level stations, you may board the train and without presenting your mobile to the validation device.
At underground stations, the received code must be presented to the reader at the entrance and exit gates.
Everyone is obligated to validate, including National Service, pre-military or semi-annual preparatory school, national service volunteers and service-year volunteers.
The ticket machines are located at all 34 Dankal stations and are accessible to the general public.
The ticketing machine allows the performance of the following actions:
- Rav-Kav card loading.
- Purchase of an empty or loaded anonymous Rav-Kav card with a travel arrangement for the Red Line only.
- Balance check and recent operations performed on the Rav-Kav card.
- Multi-passenger validation for travel arrangements of the accumulated value type and youth ticket only.
- Card validation and destination selection.
Please Note! The ticketing machines have a voice activation interface for the visually impaired, and an audio induction loop for passengers who use a hearing aid.
To enter or exit the Dankal Kiryat Arye station, you must pass through the Israel Railways’ Kiryat Arye station.
Passage via paper ticket
Paper ticket machines are located in the passenger hall. They are intended for a one-time, free of charge passage between Israel Railways and Dankal.
Passage using Rav-Kav
- A monthly pass contract at no cost can be loaded to the Rav-Kav card at the ticketing machines at Kiryat Arye station.
Please Note! A passenger who has loaded a monthly passage contract to his card is not required to present a paper passage ticket.
Passage via app
- Choose travel by Israel Railways and define Kiryat Arye station as both departure and destination. Then standby to receive a QR code and validate it at the entrance and exit.
- After leaving the Israel Railways gates, validate the trip as required. This operation is subject to a fee.
Multi-passenger validation is only available through an accumulated value type travel arrangement loaded without a special discount, or one loaded to a youth profile.
Validation via Rav-Kav card
At street-level stations – when arriving at the validation device, indicate the number of passengers and hold the Rav-Kav card against the device in order to perform the validation. To change the number of passengers, place the Rav-Kav card again, change the number of passengers and wait for confirmation.
At underground stations – you have to go to the entrance gate to the platform, hold the Rav-Kav card against the gate and wait until the last passenger passes.
Validation via apps at all types of stations – select the number of passengers and standby to receive the same number of QR codes as the number of passengers.
Please Note! When exiting an underground station, you will be required to validate each passenger’s QR code at the station’s exit gate.
Certainly! Every train trip requires validation, even for passengers who hold a travel arrangement that grants various discounts or exemptions from payment, including National Service, pre-military or semi-annual preparatory school, national service volunteers and service-year volunteers.
The ticket must be validated for each trip, regardless of the type of contract you have, including transit trips.
Everyone is obligated to validate.
In accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Transportation, the validation duty applies to all types of Rav-Kav cards and apps for each trip, regardless of profiles that qualify for a discount or free travel.
Accumulated value is an arrangement where a certain amount of money is loaded to the Rav-Kav card, which is then used for individual trips. In the various contracts, a discount is given on this arrangement according to the passengers’ discount profile (National Insurance claimants, disabled persons, senior citizens, students, children and youth)
For all the information on discounts and entitlements, click here.
A child under the age of 5 is exempt from paying for travel by public transport if he is accompanied by a passenger who has paid the fare (the exemption is for one child only per passenger with a ticket. A second child is entitled to a 50% discount). Children aged 5-18 (or over 18 if they are studying in the 12th grade or in special education) are entitled to a 50% discount. The discount is given when paying with the Rav-Kav card or the app

To receive an exemption from payment for traveling on the Red Line, a suitable profile must be loaded to the Rav-Kav card.

- Blind people.
- Volunteers – soldiers in the National Service, pre-military or semi-annual preparatory school, national service volunteers and service-year volunteers (on presentation of a valid certificate).

- Members of the security forces: soldiers in uniform, police officers and prison guards (on presentation of a valid certificate).

The Light Rail contains two connected cars, with a total of 70 m in length 2.65 m in width. The cars are accessible to wheelchairs and baby strollers. Also, part of the space has fixed seats, and the other part allows comfortable standing and contains many grab handles, alongside sitting on folding seats. The train itself has docking points for wheelchairs. The intensity of the lighting and the size of the inscription on the signs can be adjusted for people with disabilities. The doors of the Light Rail cars are not closed automatically, but by the train driver. To verify that it is safe to close the doors, cameras are installed for the driver to use before closing them. Also, the closing of the doors will be accompanied by a flashing light and a beep to ensure full accessibility for all passengers.
Yes.
A guide dog accompanying a blind person as well as a guide dog in training wearing a vest with the inscription “GUIDE DOG IN TRAINING” are allowed to enter the Light Rail when they are leashed.
Also, every service dog wearing a harness is allowed to enter stations and trains without a muzzle.
A service animal that accompanies disabled persons will be allowed to enter upon presentation of a certificate or proof that it is a service animal.
Certainly! The outstanding advantage of the Light Rail is that it is fully accessible even to passengers with disabilities. The train at street-level stations is at platform level, therefore accessible to baby strollers and wheelchairs. Access to the trains at the underground stations is via elevators and escalators, and there, too, the train will stop on the same level as the passengers, for safe and easy boarding even for baby strollers and wheelchairs, without the use of stairs or an elevator.
Also, the cars and Light Rail stations were equipped with visual and audio aids for the benefit of persons with hearing and sight impairment, and all information is provided in three languages: Hebrew, English and Arabic.
Accessibility for people with disabilities is considered a supreme value by Tevel Metro, who works hard to protect the rights of each and every passenger. Therefore, all train stations, cars, customer service, the website, digital means and bar code scanning are accessible to all passengers, providing them with a comfortable and safe travel and service experience.
Certainly.
You can board the Light Rail with an unfolded or folded baby stroller. The baby stroller is included in the price of the train trip and is exempt from additional payment.
Traveling with an animal on the Light Rail will only be possible if it can be placed on its owner’s lap or held in its owner’s hands, according to the Railroad Regulations, 5772-2012 Article 18a.
Please Note!
- Dogs must be muzzled and leashed.
- Other animals must be in a box or basket in a way that prevents them from injuring or harassing the other train passengers.
- A blind person’s guide dog as well as a dog in training wearing a “GUIDE DOG IN TRAINING” vest may board the train when they are leashed.
Boarding the Light Rail with a scooter or bicycle is only allowed when they are folded.
According to the instructions of the National Public Transport Authority, Article 6.5, entering the train with a bicycle or scooter throughout all operating hours is only allowed when they are folded. It is forbidden to enter with a bicycle or scooter that cannot be folded or such that have been fitted with ancillary facilities such as a storage box or a chair.
Please Note! It is strictly forbidden to ride a bicycle or scooter in the station area and inside the train.
Electronic information displays are placed at the train stations that provide real-time updates on the arrival time of the Light Rail. Useful electronic information is also available in the train cars and it appears in three languages.
It is not possible to purchase a travel ticket inside Dankal cars.
Certainly! This is one of the biggest advantages of the Red Line.
The Gush Dan Light Rail receives priority and precedence at traffic lights, which allows for smooth travel and arrival at a predetermined time.
